a journal on low-impact, low-stress living in the modern age

First steps

Alright! So here I am. My name is Frank, and I hope you enjoy this site. Please check back often, because I intend to expand it quite a bit. I plan to make this blog about one person’s journey into…well, hippy-ness. Not the stereotypical type of hippy, either, following Phish around the world in a VW camper van or bringing goats and chickens with me on an old school bus painted in psychedelic colors. I’m thinking more of the mindset of the modern-day hippy. I’m just concerned about reducing my impact (some people call it ‘footprint’ nowadays) on the environment, getting people to do the same in low-impact ways and generally living a low-stress kind of existence.

There are many ways and directions I could go in this first…rather, second post, but for now I’ll just say that I’m going down the road towards low-impact living in two ways:

  1. I’m hosting this site on servers owned by sustainablewebsites.com, which offsets all of the energy they use with wind power. Cool!
  2. I’m saving YOU energy as you read this, by using a black background for this web site! How cool is that? Did you know that if Google were to use a black background instead of white, people on normal CRT monitors would use far less energy and save loads of money? Try this for yourself at Blackle or Earthle! Unfortunately the same is not true of standard LCD monitors, as they are illuminated from behind no matter what color it is displaying. * UPDATE * Google replies to the idea that a black background would save energy and suggests turning down the brightness on LCD monitors and activating the energy features on your computer system. Also, see if your next computer system meets the Energy Star 4.0 standards.

So, we’re off to a good start already! Check back soon for another update.
